EDT, September 14, 2013 In her recent bestseller “Cinderella Ate My Daughter,” author Peggy Orenstein relates how, back in 2000, a Disney executive went to check out a “Disney on Ice” show and found himself surrounded by little girls in princess costumes, the bulk of them homemade. Appalled at how such a massive branding opportunity could have been overlooked, the very next day he got a team together to start working on what would become Disney Princess, a media franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company . The executive’s revelation soon yielded a bonanza for Disney. There are now more than 26,000 Disney Princess items on the market and in 2012, Princess products generated sales of $4.6 billion.
